Special Education Teacher

Position Description:  

We are seeking a Special Education Teacher to lead a class of 6-8 students. Lead Teachers will work in conjunction with a Licensed Master Social Worker, associate teacher(s), and related service providers to ensure the educational and social-emotional growth of all students assigned to their class. They must maintain a positive and appropriate classroom environment that adheres to EPIC’s educational philosophy and grants students the greatest opportunities for success in learning, expression, and safety.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement engaging, project-based lessons and units of study 
  • Develop differentiated learning plans for students based on their individual strengths and needs
  • Work collaboratively with all members of the EPIC team, including Social Workers, Associate Teachers, Related Service Providers, and Administrators to plan and implement lessons, units of study, and individualized academic and behavioral intervention plans for each student 
  • Assess student needs and growth and review outside and in-house assessments to identify learning, social, psychological, and cognitive challenges of assigned students
  • Communicate with families daily to ensure mutual cooperation and to communicate student progress and goals
  • Log daily student behavioral data through Classdojo
  • Participate in staff meetings and weekly student case conferences 
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned by the Head of School 

Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education or related field 
  • At least 2 years prior special education teaching experience
  • NYS Teaching Certification preferred
  • Must know how to walk the narrow line of firm, fair, and fun with students
  • A driven passion for improving special education and a belief that all children do well when they can
  • Proven record of never giving up on a student

Assistant Teacher

We are currently seeking a full-time Assistant Teacher to support our teaching staff in ensuring a safe and consistent learning environment for our students. For the 2020-2021 school year, this position will be moving between and assisting all three of our current classrooms. 

Job Description:

  • Provide academic and social-emotional support as needed for students across all classrooms 
  • Provide support as needed during enrichments, recess, and lunch periods
  • Carry out the responsibilities of Lead Teachers and Associate Teachers in the case of absences  
  • Support the implementation of each student’s individual behavioral intervention plan under the guidance of EPIC’s lead teachers and Licensed Clinical Social Worker
  • Perform assorted tasks assigned by Lead Teachers, including copying, printing, scanning, laminating, and maintaining classroom organization
  • Participate in weekly student case conferences    
  • Log daily student behavioral data through ClassDojo 

Qualifications:

  • A passion for improving special education and a belief that all children do well when they can 
  • A Bachelor’s degree in education, psychology, or a similar field  
  • At least two years of experience working with children, preferably in a special education setting 
  • Technologically fluent and adept at navigating unfamiliar platforms (proficiency in Google Suite, NearPod, Classdojo, Zoom, Adobe Creative Cloud, WordPress, and Social Media a plus) 
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills 
  • A commitment to learning new things and bettering themselves
  • Open to and comfortable with receiving constructive feedback

Part-Time Tutor

EPIC Academy is a Brooklyn-based elementary school replacement program designed to provide top-tier academic instruction and behavioral support to students with special needs. We are seeking a part-time Upper Elementary Tutor to work with fourth and fifth-grade students on academic content and assignments. The Tutor will work three hours a day, five days a week, typically during the morning.  

Job Description:

  • Working with students to help them understand and practice key concepts and skills in English Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies   
  • Assisting students with projects, assessment preparations, and other class assignments
  • Reinforcing skills to improve academic performance
  • Reviewing classroom and curricula topics and assignments
  • Providing students positive and constructive feedback 
  • Fostering a positive, strengths-based, and upbeat learning environment that accommodates neurodiversity
  • Building rapport with students in order to establish trust and mutual respect

Qualifications:

  • Maintaining a consistently energetic, upbeat, and positive attitude 
  • Must know how to walk the narrow line of firm, fair, and fun with students
  • Preferably an undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a degree in education, psychology, social work, or a related field

Social Media and Communications Intern

We are seeking a Social Media and Communications Intern to support our Program team in creating content and managing our social media platforms, website, and blog. This summer internship will begin in May/June and has a potential to continue in the 2021-2022 school year. The position will be primarily in-person during the school year and remote during the summer months. 

Job Description:

  • Oversee and create daily digital content for social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn.
  • Communicate and brainstorm with the Program Team about social media campaigns.
  • Collaborate with Program Assistant and various staff members to write weekly blog posts for the school’s website.
  • Support Program Assistant in writing the bi-monthly EPIC newsletter, directed towards current families, prospective families, and education providers. 
  • Support Program Assistant in expanding and maintaining our network via social media and Linkedin. 
  • Perform related administrative tasks as needed. 

Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate program.
  • Commit 10-12 hours per week. 
  • Detail oriented, with excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills. 
  • Experience with WordPress, Photoshop, and other photo editing apps and software a plus. 
  • A passion for improving special education and a belief that all children do well when they can. 
  • Experience working with children, preferably in a special education setting a plus. 
  • Independent with an ability to take initiative.
  • A commitment to learning new things and bettering themselves.
  • Open to and comfortable with receiving constructive feedback.
